The United Kingdom's Pathway for Space-Made Medicines

What has the UK done to prepare for medicines made in orbit, and why does it matter beyond Britain?

Chapter summary

the UK is the first country to set out a coordinated regulatory approach.

Key takeaways

  1. 1

On 5 March 2026 the UK Space Agency, the medicines regulator MHRA, the Regulatory Innovation Office and the Civil Aviation Authority issued a joint statement promising guidance, principles-based case studies, a regulatory sandbox and supply-chain engagement for in-orbit manufacturing of medicines.

  2. 2

The MHRA says its existing rules can already accommodate novel approaches, including those using microgravity, and pointed developers to its scientific advice and innovation services; a fuller roadmap was due in autumn 2026.

  3. 3

The UK also funded a £250,000 feasibility study by BioOrbit on microgravity crystallisation of biologic cancer drugs.
